An electrospray technology company run by an MBA alumnus from Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) received the Water Innovator of Year award in November 2014. The organisation aims to supply novel energy saving equipment and processes for desalination and other industrial processes.

RSM alumnus Ross Gordon took the reins at High Voltage Water in March 2014, the same month he graduated from RSM’s Full-time International MBA programme. At the Watervisie congress in Rotterdam, the company competed for the third Water Innovator of the Year award against two other nominees by presenting a four-minute pitch about their innovation and its benefits, and by answering detailed questions from audience members who also work in the water industry.

The Water Innovator of the Year award recognises the developers of the most ground-breaking technology, product or service in the water sector, and is organised by Watervisie, an independent group comprised of experts, suppliers and customers in the water industry. A combination of jury and public votes determined which organisation won the award. The expert jury, which was led by Prof. Cees Buisman of research institute Wetsus, unanimously chose High Voltage Water as the award winner of 2014. High Voltage Water also won the online poll.

Reducing energy use for fresh water

“We were both flattered and surprised to win the Water Innovator of the Year award,” said Ross Gordon, business director at High Voltage Water. “We’re a young company and our technology development is moving incredibly quickly. This award shows that the industry also recognises the potential of our technology to make a real difference around the world.”

High Voltage Water’s pioneering work in multi-effect distillation (MED) systems can significantly reduce energy use and capital expenditure in desalination facilities. This could significantly affect water usage worldwide and improve access to fresh water where it is most needed.

As part of the award, High Voltage Water will be exposed to the water industry by reports and advertising space in Utilities magazine.
