Robbert Brouwer from Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) plans to run the TCS New York City Marathon 2015. The chairman of RSM’s study association STAR, is raising funds for KiKa, a charity fund fighting cancer in children.

Robbert Brouwer completed RSM’s BSc in International Business Administration programme in 2014. He ran the Rotterdam Marathon in 2014, a half marathon in The Hague in 2015, and is now preparing for the marathon in New York City on 1 November.

STAR: learn, grow, and excel

“I like running, and feel that it would be great to use this hobby to contribute something to community and to have a really good time at the same time,” says Brouwer, who aims to raise at least €6,000 through his KiKa donation webpage and to improve his personal marathon record of 4 hours and 17 minutes.

Brouwer is using his skills and knowledge from his bachelor studies at RSM and his work as the chairman of the STAR Board to reach his objective. “The project has many dimensions. There’s the human factor, the budget factor, the time factor, and more. I need to set goals, focus on making progress and achieve success. I learned to do this at RSM. And of course, STAR’s motto is to learn, grow, and excel.”

KiKa: reducing mortality rate

KiKa aims to increase the chances of recovery for children suffering from cancer from 75 per cent to 95 per cent within the next 10 years. “This is an incredible, but very challenging goal,” says Brouwer, who chose this charity because of his experience of working with children as a football referee and a sailing instructor.

“Children should be able to play and do sports, not be in a hospital,” he said. “I’m proud to make a little contribution to KiKa’s goal of pushing the mortality rate for children suffering from cancer back from 25 per cent to 5 per cent within the upcoming 10 years.”
