A series of announcements of new business school rankings is the reason why Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) is celebrating this week. The school has improved its standings in nearly every relevant programme, school and institutional ranking.

This year, RSM climbed six places globally in the FT Executive MBA ranking with its Part-time Executive MBA, and five places with its Global Executive OneMBA programme. RSM also successfully defended last year's global fifth place in the FT Master in Management ranking.

More good news is that participation in RSM’s Executive Education Open Programmes has grown sufficiently to qualify the school for inclusion in the FT Open Programmes ranking for the first time. RSM made its debut at number 72.

Back in the top 10

When taken in combination, these results have resulted in RSM returning to the top 10 of the FT European Business School ranking, the ‘ranking of the rankings’, announced on Monday, 5 December.

“Every ranking has its methodological flaws and weaknesses, but together they emphasise the high quality and employability of our students and graduates. Our own measurements have shown this, in our recent MSc graduate employment report, and the high quality of both our programme portfolio and our research,” said RSM Dean, Professor Steef van de Velde.

Prof. van de Velde pointed out that good rankings enable the school to attract the brightest students, to attract and retain the best faculty and staff, and to work with the most forward-thinking organisations, in order to be a force for positive change.

Curriculum and research output

Other considerations aside from earnings and status are given importance in The Corporate Knights Better World MBA ranking, which puts RSM’s International Full-time MBA in seventh place globally and third in Europe. “Corporate Knights can be regarded as a successor of the Aspen Institute's Beyond Grey Pinstripes ranking that ceased after 2011, and we can be very proud of this result because it clearly reflects our commitment to corporate social responsibility and sustainability that is ingrained in our curriculum and research output,” said Steef van de Velde.

Employability of RSM graduates

In the Economist Full-time MBA ranking, RSM improved its individual performances in some categories, such as international and gender diversity and employability of graduates, with 98 per cent of our recent MBA graduates landing a job within three months of graduation. However, the loss of a few places overall in this ranking is put down to increased competition, and this ranking’s strong focus on salary increase after graduation.

Business Week International Business Schools ranking keeps RSM in 26th place, like last year. Within that result, RSM has increased its ranking for salary (from 24 to 21) and placement (from 25 to 13) as well as employer satisfaction (from 23 to 22).

Business and economics

Looking at institutional rankings, the US News & World Report Best Global Universities Ranking puts Erasmus University Rotterdam at number 15 globally and third in Europe for Economics and Business (up from 17th and fourth respectively last year).

The Times Higher Education ranking for the subject area Business & Economics puts RSM on 17th place worldwide and 4th in Europe.
