An internship gives you the opportunity to explore an industry, company or job so you can make informed decisions about your future career. The RSM Graduate Placement Report 2015 shows that almost 40% of master graduates found a job via their internship; either at the internship company or because of the skills they gained during it. Doing an internship was the second most valuable way of finding a job, they said. The most valuable way according to the survey, was using their own network.
Here’s what you need to know about doing an internship as an MSc student at RSM. There are two possibilities:
- As an option or requirement in particular MSc programmes
- As a voluntary internship during, or after, your studies
These MSc programmes offer the opportunity to do an official internship during the company project elective in combination with your Master thesis, thereby gaining credits (ECTS) for your internship.
· Business Information Management (BIM)
· Management of Innovation (MI)
· Supply Chain Management (SCM)
Only the MSc International Management/CEMS programme has a 10-week international internship as a compulsory component. Information can be found in the CEMS internship guide 2015-2016. Please complete the internship proposal from and send it to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Other MSc programmes do not offer the opportunity to do an internship during the Master Programme, but it might still be possible to combine your Master thesis with an internship. To do this, consult your thesis supervisor in advance. You can find the MSc thesis manual here.
Voluntary internships can be done at any time before, during or after your MSc programme.
You can do a voluntary internship in the summer break between your bachelor graduation and starting your master programme. If you would like to do an a longer voluntary internship, you can also decide to delay the start of your master programme to February, or even a year later.
Be aware that it might be difficult to complete a voluntary internship alongside your MSc studies, even if it’s a part-time position.
You can also do an internship after your graduation. You can fill out the postponement of active degree form, if you would like to stay registered after your graduation. This manual is about requesting a postponement of graduation for the academic year 2015-2016.
If you remain registered at RSM, we can be your official contact during your voluntary internship; we can sign internship documents such as the company contract, if required. We can’t do this if you are no longer registered as a student at RSM when you are doing your voluntary internship.
In each of these cases, the voluntary internship is not compulsory and therefore no academic requirements must be taken into account.
Please note that specific regulations apply to non-EU/EEA students who would like to do an internship. Please go to the special website page for more information.
