Cees B.M. van Riel (1951) is professor of Corporate Communication at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University. He is director of the Corporate Communication Centre, a research institute at the same university, and has worked as a communication strategy consultant for a variety of companies in Europe.
Van Riel is active as the managing director of the Reputation Institute (see
www.reputationinstitute.com), a global network to which the Corporate Communication Centre of the Erasmus University belongs.
Cees van Riel published several books and articles about corporate communication in financial institutions in Europe and the United States (1988), Employee Communication (1991), Management of communication (1993) and Principles of Corporate Communication which was published by Prentice Hall, first in Dutch (first edition in 1992, revised second edition in 1996), in English (1995) and in Spanish (1996). His recent publications focus on Reputation Management (Strategic Corporate Communication, Samsom, (2000), Corporate Communication, Het managen van reputatie, Kluwer, (2001) and Fame & Fortune (together with Charles Fombrun) which was just published.
Cees van Riel is the editor in chief (together with Charles Fombrun of Stern Business School, New York University, USA) of the
Corporate Reputation Review (an academic journal) and the
Tijdscrijft voor Strategische Bedrijscommunicatie. He is also founding father of the Master of Corporate Communication (degree) programme at Erasmus University Rotterdam. Cees van Riel's business activities includes being the Managing Director of the Reputation Institute in New York, founding the RFN, the Dutch reputation forum and a member of the Branding Steering Committee of ING Group.
Cees van Riel has also been a communication strategy consultant with Coca Cola, Baker & McKenzie, Dresdner Bank, Delta Lloyd, De Alliantie, DSM, Eneco, Fed Ex, Fortis, Grolsch, IBM, ING, INVE, Nederlandse Spoorwegen, Nutreco, Postbank, Philips, Shell, Siemens, Telekom and TNT.
