PhD – project
“Entrepreneurship and Economic Success in Transitional Economies. The Case of China: Long-term Business Relations in an environment of unenforceable contracts.”
Supervision: Prof. Dr. Barbara Krug (Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University), Prof. Dr. Richard Whitley (Manchester Business School), Dr. Steven Casper (Kegg Graduate Institute).
The research deals with private entrepreneurship and innovation in China. Despite an institutional environment characterized by high levels of uncertainty, entrepreneurship thrives even in the knowledge-intensive sectors. The research asks for explanations how innovative capabilities are developed in such an adverse institutional environment. Three theoretical approaches form the basis for this study: comparative institutional analysis, technological & innovation systems, resource-based and dynamic capability perspective. The combination of capability (resource)-based and institutional perspectives promises valuable insights because it emphasizes the organizational nature of competitive advantages and the role of management in mobilizing and transforming human and material resources, while acknowledging institutional forces which influence the way firms manage their resources and determine the value of their resources. The study relies on a comparative case study of 45 private software entrepreneurs in Zhejiang province and an analysis of their institutional environment through 80 field interviews. There are several sub-projects: 1) the re-emergence of local capitalism in Zhejiang; 2) organizational innovation in China’s private sector; 3) entrepreneurial risk in China; 4) institutional structuring of innovative capabilities.
