Short Biography
Prof. Dr. Frans A.J. van den Bosch is Professor of Management Interfaces between Organizations and Business Environment of the Department of Strategic Management and Business Environment, Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University.
Frans A.J. van den Bosch holds a BA in Mechanical Engineering from the Polytechnic of Rotterdam (with distinction), received his Master's degree in Economics (
cum laude) from the Erasmus University Rotterdam and his PhD from Leiden University, the Netherlands. He was an assistant professor and an associate professor of Economics at the Faculty of Economics of the Erasmus University Rotterdam. He joined the Delft Graduate School of Management in 1984 as an associate professor of Economics. In 1988 he was appointed as Full Professor of Management in the Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University. He is a fellow and chairman of the Programme Board of the Erasmus Research Institute of Management (ERIM). Presently he is vice-chairman of the Department of Strategic Management and Business Environment, director of the Erasmus Strategic Renewal Center (ESRC) and of the Dutch Partner Institute of the World Economic Forum (WEF)
His major research interests are the development of integrative strategy frameworks incorporating both the externally and internally antecedents of strategy; the application of these frameworks to general management issues, such as make, buy or co-operate decisions; strategic renewal processes, strategic innovations; organizational ambidexterity; corporate governance and stakeholder management; internal and external networks; and knowledge absorption and knowledge creation processes.
He has published several books and over 160 articles in scientific journals including chapters in books in the areas of strategy, international business, general management, economics and industry studies. His scientific papers have appeared in among others
Academy of Management Journal, Administrative Science Quarterly, Agrarwirtschaft, Business and Society, Corporate Governance, De Economist, European Management Journal, International Studies of Management and Organization, Journal of Management Studies, Journal of Business Venturing, Long Range Planning, Management Science, Organization Science and
Organization Studies. Since 1985 he has been fellow of the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIAS). Van den Bosch is a board member of several scientific journals including Long Range Planning, Journal of Management Studies, Organization Science and Organization Studies.
He has supervised 25 PhD-theses, has been member of more than 30 PhD-committees and was invited as an external examiner of Antwerp University, City University London and Warwick University (UK) Indian Institute of Science. On behalf of the Erasmus University Rotterdam, he acted in 1993 as honorary promoter of Michael Porter of Harvard Business School.
Dr. Van den Bosch is a member of the Academy of Management, Strategic Management Society, International Business Association, European Group for Organizational Studies, The Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences, Royal Dutch Association of Economics and the NIAS Fellow Association. He is an editorial board member of various top journals in the strategy and management field including Journal of Management Studies, Longe Range Planning and Organization Studies.
Dr. Van den Bosch has been actively involved in the business community and the public sector, e.g. as vice-chairman of the Rotterdam Chamber of Commerce, member of the Rotterdam City Council, chairman of the Rotterdam Enterprise Prize Committee, advisor of a Dutch trade union association and as chairman of the Board of Non-executive Directors of Dutch companies. At present his main activities concern research, teaching and executive education.
