A NEW BUSINESS ERA DEMANDS NEW AREAS OF EXPERTISE

China is dominating headlines as the world’s most dynamic economy and its development is crucial for overcoming the present world recession. Chinese companies floating their firms on European stock exchanges and buying European companies generate new forms of co-operation between firms and business systems. In this uncharted business territory, there’s a demand for graduates who combine sound business management skills with a thorough knowledge of China’s economy, business sector and culture.

The MSc in Chinese Economy and Business is a new programme launched in September 2009 designed to meet this demand. It is the result of a unique collaboration between Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University and the Chinese Department at Leiden University. The programme combines the outstanding expertise of both institutions and is taught by some of Europe’s leading faculty in the field.

What will you learn here?

RSM and Leiden University provides a unique education in Chinese economy, firms in China and intercultural skills, such as:

  • How the economy functions: not merely in one marketplace but in multiple environments;
  • How domestic firms cope with varying business environments in China;
  • How foreign firms operate and collaborate with Chinese business partners;
  • Differences in leadership styles and business practices within China, and between Chinese and foreign companies;
  • Differences in culture and business ethics in China compared to other economies
  • Understanding new business venturing in China’s dynamic and uncertain business environment;
  • Opportunities for co-operation and joint innovation by adapting conventional management concepts and skills in order to invest in sustainable business relationships with Chinese partners.

 Students in this programme can expect:

  • Membership of a highly diverse, ambitious and international student community;
  • Interaction with Chinese and Western business leaders in Europe and in China;
  • An innovative mix of educational formats ranging from case studies and internships to group projects and individual research;
  • Enthusiastic and supportive teaching faculty from two of Europe’s top universities and research institutes;
  • The newest knowledge of Chinese economics and businesses and an understanding of how to research and analyse business processes;
  • Relevant cross-cultural management skills.

At the conclusion of the programme, you will have gained a deep understanding of the differences between Chinese and Western business systems and the tools to manage them. Students acquire insights into the inner Chinese political debate and how it relates to business practice; the ability to adapt and modify conventional management concept and skills; and the know-how needed to invest in sustainable business relationships with key Chinese players.
