Fulfillment is not a dream!

Fulfillment is not a dream!

When you hear the word “coaching” what does it conjure up in your mind? Someone who will help you beat depression, change your personality, help you through that rough patch? Well, all of the above are possible, but you don’t have to be in a tough situation in order to receive … or give … a little coaching and help you attain fulfillment in whatever you do.

The first step is to understand what it is that would fulfil you … it may sound simple but there are enough people around who go through life doing something their grand-parents did, or that would make their parents proud instead of investigating who they really are and what would fulfil them. This ‘investigation’ can be quite difficult and that is where being coached can help; finding someone who will ask you the right questions to get you to think about what you are passionate about, how you feel, how you think, how you act.

Within the WE@RSM network we have many discussions about there not being enough women in senior management positions or on Boards, and that is a simple truth. You only need to look at the statistics to see this. However, as a coach, I would say that not every woman needs to make it to the Board in order to live a fulfilled life and be the best they can be, which is what we encourage. The trick is to find what job, career, position, result would fulfil you and work on that instead of spending a lot of time on working on someone else’s idea of what would fulfil you. If this is a position on a Board then great, but if it is not and you don’t have such lofty ambitions then that is great too – this world needs an equal number of women in all kinds of industries and positions and you are part of that brave new world. And if you are already in a position that fulfils you that’s wonderful – take some time to share your experiences with other women so that they can learn from you how to achieve those goals that may seem unattainable!

So how do you become fulfilled and help others in their journey to fulfillment? It is important to understand that this needs to be something you have to be honest with yourself about. It can be a short or a long journey, but here are a few tips to start with:

·         Investigate your values;

·         Isolate one value you would like to revere more fully in your life;

·         Ask yourself the question “what would you want to do that would have you getting up in the morning looking forward to it?”

·         Find a way of achieving this in a manner that fulfils your innate values.

Fulfillment is far more than putting a positive spin on things. It’s connecting your actions to your core values and creating a rich and full life where the real you is fully motivated to achieve the best you can be. Once you have found that fulfillment then it is your turn to pay that forward; women empowering women is powerful!
