Since 1986, all first-year students of the Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University write a strategic business plan for an existing small or medium-sized business. The Strategic Business Plan project is a flagship course of the bachelor program. The plan, written in the period from December to May by teams consisting of four students, encompasses a comprehensive analysis of the business, its environment, and the formulation of strategic options and an implementation plan.

The best student teams compete each year for the Strategic Business Plan Award and cash prizes. The purpose of this award ceremony is to reward the students for their excellent performance and at the same time show the new students what they are expected to do. Tutors nominate their best teams and after several rounds of selections, five finalists are invited to present their plan in front of an audience of their peers, representatives from businesses, and staff of the RSM. Furthermore, they defend their plan for an expert jury, which will announce the winner and runner-up of the Strategic Business Plan Award.
The Strategic Business Plan Awards 2011 took place on Thursday September 22nd, at 19.00 in the Aula, Campus Woudestein. Click here for all the pictures of the festive event!

For Entrepeneurs
“I normally don’t read such voluminous reports, but I read this one with much interest. In the end, it does deal with your own enterprise, and even though it was produced by first-year students, I felt it gave me a surprisingly multi-faceted picture of my own company.”
If you find yourself on this website, as a entrepreneur You may have been referred to the website by a group of students. The Strategic Business Plan course is made possible by the willingness of entrepreneurs to give students an opportunity to learn from your business. Initially, many entrepreneurs cooperate to help out the students. However, as the project runs its course many find out that our students grow increasingly critical and challenge you to think about your organization and the environment in which it operates and they can be more useful than initially expected.
The entrepreneur’s contribution is limited to a number of interviews with student teams, so the teams can learn about the company, a tour around the company to get to know the company even better and providing necessary information. Furthermore, students talk to employees, customers and other parties about the company and its market environment. Many entrepreneurs claim that after the project is finished, students have exceeded their expectations.
