Management of Technology & Innovation

Organisations must have skills to deal with technology and innovation. “Business likes to work with our department – we have a long tradition of collaborating with business in order to create research that is useful for practice,” says RSM Department of Management of Technology and Innovation (MTI) Chair Prof. dr. Jan Dul.

Studying processes that are core to business success

MTI focuses on three main areas of research and practice: Management of Innovation, Operations Management / Supply Chain Management, and Business Process Excellence. “We focus on the primary value-adding processes that are core to business success,” Professor Dul continues. “That means the invention, creation, production and distribution of products and services. Our work on business process innovation and management supports industry in staying up-to-date and competitive in terms of performance.”

Impact on business and society through relevant research

Apart from fundamental research, the department MTI also frequently conducts research studies on behalf of third parties, among which are many Dutch and international companies as well as public authorities such as the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and the European Commission. Whether addressing business directly through working with such companies as DSM, Nokia, Philips, and Unilever, or through such projects and Centres of Expertise as the Material Handling Forum, Smartport, Sustainable Innovation or Standardisation, MTI seeks the best solutions for a sustainable and stakeholder-friendly future.

Teaching excellence to help students connect theory to practice

“Beyond our top position in European research, we also take our relationship with students very seriously – we see teaching as a way to connect our students to concrete business issues, as well as to the latest theory,” says Professor Dul. “Our expertise is part of every teaching programme at RSM – and our faculty often win teaching awards, in addition to research grants and other honours.”
