Prof. Jan Rotmans, Professor of Transitions and Transition Management

Professor Jan Rotmans is an engaged scholar, with over 200 publications in the fields of climate change, global change modelling, sustainable development, transitions, and system innovations.

In 1997, after obtaining his PhD, he became Professor at the International Centre for Integrative Studies (ICIS) at Maastricht University. In 2004, he created research institute DRIF (Dutch Research Institute For Transitions). He also became Professor in Transitions and Transitions Management at Erasmus University Rotterdam.

Next to his academic work (at the local, national, and international levels), Professor Rotmans seeks to contribute to society. He wants to pave the way to a sustainable society, which requires a radical change or transition. He applies his knowledge to developing the requisite rules of the game, which enable practitioners to move forward with projects in their focal regions and sectors.

Professor Rotmans created the foundation Urgenda in 2007 to turn the Netherlands into a sustainable frontrunner. He seeks to engage as many partisans as possible in this new movement. Urgenda is the organisation for sustainability and innovation that seeks to turn the Netherlands into a more sustainable country, together with firms, governments, civil-society organisations, and individuals.
