Analytics for the win: advances in sports analytics and lessons for management
Academic speaker: Dr Otto Koppius, Assistant Professor of Business Analytics
Practitioner speaker: Henk-Jan Zwolle, CEO/founder of MyPerfectCoach
Big data and analytics has swept throughout professional sports since the publication of Moneyball. The high-value stakes and need to outperform competitors forces sports organisations to search for continuous performance improvements. Drawing on examples from various sports, we will discuss how analytics can uncover winning tactics on and off the field, and how it assists in improving talent development, helps to prevent injuries and improve athlete’s fitness and recovery.
So what can managers in other industries learn from sports analytics?
Together with Henk-Jan Zwolle, Olympic gold medalist, exercise physiologist and CEO/founder of MyPerfectCoach, you will explore in detail how sensors and wearables enable athletes at all levels to optimise their fitness and recovery. The MyPerfectCoach app uses highly detailed, individualised models tailored to particular users instead of group averages. You will also discuss how the same principles of fitness and recovery generalise beyond sports and can be applied in other work settings for both physical work as well as office work.
