Description

SDG12 - Responsible consumption and production

Tuesday 19 November

Continuing our series of knowledge and networking events based on the role of business in achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

This time we focus on the role of supply chains. Our evening event takes the form of a masterclass, with two presentations, followed by an informal networking reception.

There are strategic and tactical dilemmas in developing supply chains to meet the SDGs. With several tiers of suppliers, societal pressure, complex certification requirements and complicated supply chains that reach around the world, what strategies are likely to produce progress towards SDG 12: Responsible consumption and production?

Presentation 1

Rob Zuidwijk, Professor of Global Supply Chains and Ports

International supply chains struggle with monitoring and reporting of sustainable practices; how well they do it depends on the structure of the supply chain and its visibility, and here’s where AI and blockchain have a role. How can research help industries to use the physical, informational and organisational networks of their supply chains to promote effective monitoring and reporting of sustainable practices?

Presentation 2

Jan Roodenburg, Former Vice President, SC & Industrial Operations EMEA for Hewlett Packard Enterprise

Product inspections don’t measure the sustainability of the processes that manufactured them. We need visibility, from the suppliers through manufacturing, marketing and sales to consumers – and it needs to be a global effort, with big companies working together towards the standards that are set and enforced by neutral third parties like NGOs. What would such a company-wide strategy look like?
