New professor Tom Mom makes RSM a ‘strategic entrepreneurship hotspot’
Dr Tom Mom has become the third professor in the field of entrepreneurship at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM). His chair as Professor of Strategic Growth and Implementation relates to expertise that sits at the nexus of the fields of entrepreneurship and strategic management.
A passion for entrepreneurship is important for companies and their leaders, says Prof. Mom, who practices what he preaches by taking new knowledge from his specialism straight into business through executive education. Mom holds two other positions at RSM: academic director of RSM’s Executive MBA programme, and director of the Erasmus Executive Programme in Strategic Management. He has transformed executive programmes over the past few years by applying knowledge derived from his own research, renewing their relevance and increasing their growth.
Entrepreneurship, growth and strategy implementation
Prof. Mom explains that companies need to be proficient in continuously identifying and creating new opportunities for growth. But their passion for entrepreneurship must match their ability to be faster and better than competitors at implementing growth initiatives. And to do that demands excellence in implementation and execution; such excellence should strengthen existing advantages and enable the company to reap the benefits of new growth initiatives, according to the newly appointed professor.
Reconciling two conflicting behaviours
“However, being proficient in both the creation and capture of value is difficult because exploring new growth opportunities and conducting effective implementation are associated with fundamentally different ‒ and even conflicting ‒ mindsets, structures, and routines. I aim to increase our understanding of how organisations, their leaders and industries, may become proficient in these two apparently conflicting behaviours”, he says.
Prof. Mom’s research and education focuses on three themes.
- Leadership and the characteristics of business leaders who have the ability, qualities and characteristics to lead a fast-growing organisation. “Leadership is not all about passion, but includes strategic insight too. They need to be ambidextrous ‒ to be aligned and efficient in managing business demands while being adaptive to environmental changes.”
- Multilevel organisations and how to design them so the business ecosystem and the organisational conditions and context provide fertile conditions for fast growth. “The creation of partnerships, networking behaviour and collaboration with start-ups are important here.”
- How to implement and execute strategy. “In each developmental phase of an organisation – from start-up to multinational corporate – there are crucial roles for both strategy formulation and strategy execution.”
About Tom Mom
Prof. Mom is active in research and advisory projects for companies and governments in areas such as new business development, strategic growth, innovation, and strategy execution. He teaches courses on strategy, corporate entrepreneurship and implementation to PhD, executive, and master students at RSM, and was a visiting scholar at the University of Geneva in the chair for Strategic Management. His research interests include new business development and corporate growth, ambidexterity, strategic renewal, and strategy execution. His research has appeared in journals such as the Journal of Management Studies, Organization Science, Organization Studies, MIT Sloan Management Review, California Management Review, Human Resource Management, and Long Range Planning. He has presented his research at major international conferences and acts as a reviewer for various journals.
Tom earned his PhD in Strategic Management and a master degree in Strategic Management (Cum Laude) from RSM, and a master in International Management from the Community of European Management Schools (CEMS) preceded by an exchange to the Universität St. Gallen in Switzerland.
