Trader simulation teaches students how to make profits
Students of the MSc Finance & Investments Advanced programme at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) experienced what it means to be a trader during a trading simulation with Oxyor, which offers trainings about investment banking, on Monday 4 December 2017.
The day started with a presentation about trading and the simulation process by Oxyor’s financial market specialist Robert van Loon, who has worked at APG Investments, Goldman Sachs and ABN AMRO.
Following price movements
While the simulation took place on RSM’s campus, the 46 students from the FI-A Class of 2018 then had the opportunity to act like they were on a real trading floor. They tested their trading skills in two rounds; first the students traded Heineken stock, and then USD EUR FX.
“The simulation started of slowly,” says German student Julia Bernhardt. “Then it quickly picked up pace and everyone had to follow current price movements and the news, keep an eye on their positions, but also service their clients and trade with other participants at the same time.”
Bernhardt added that when the first price drop hit the market, the reactions in the room were quite mixed. “Depending on the position, some students realised a great profit or loss. After each round, we could check and discuss our performance and possible strategies to realise more profit.”
Latvian student Matīss Degro said: “The trading simulation was very exciting and challenging. The combination of trying to follow the constant flow of information, and the competitive aspect of the simulation made it a truly exhilarating experience.”
Oxyor develops and delivers simulations and learning solutions used in professional education throughout the global financial sector. Its simulations cover global cross-sector trading and investing, wholesale and retail banking, risk management, pension and insurance management.
