New MBA cohort embraces soft skills and coaching

Almost 40 nationalities are represented by the MBA Class of 2019 at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM). The 135 International Full-time MBA students kicked off their one-year curriculum on campus in January 2018. The orientation week included the first classes, introduction sessions and a series of sessions on personal leadership development.

Sherry Hernani worked in corporate law before coming to RSM for her MBA. “I didn’t realise I liked finance until this week. I’m also learning about statistics but am still struggling with them.” Hernani says she’s impressed by RSM’s care for soft skills, leadership and coaching. “This kind of personal process are really hard to do by ourselves but with guidance it becomes quite easy. I want to spend this year learning as much as I can, and working hard to achieve my goals.”

Coming from South America to live in Europe was a big step. “I love the Netherlands: Rotterdam, Amsterdam and The Hague too. Everything is so different from where I’m from; it’s very organised, clean and healthy. Almost everyone rides a bicycle.”

38 nationalities

The 135 MBA participants are 97 per cent international. They represent 38 nationalities. Their average age is 30, and they have an average of 6 years’ work experience. Their academic backgrounds include economics, engineering, science and medicine, law, humanities and arts. Their industries vary widely and include financial services, energy, consulting, manufacturing, consumer goods, hospitality, entertainment, telecommunications, education, electronics, health sciences, NGOs, media and publishing, and agribusiness.

Ecuadorian MBA student Andres Ginatta also says he likes the vibe in Rotterdam. “It’s a dynamic city. I’m also impressed with RSM’s organisation and curriculum, and I look forward to finding my career purpose and finding my real passion about what I want to do in life. I’m excited to get the right technical tools to be a strong professional.

Personal leadership development

The orientation week kicked off with introductions by RSM Dean Steef van de Velde, and Dean of Education Eric Waarts. The week’s activities also included campus tours, lectures, personal leadership development sessions, and a team building drumming exercise conducted by Sewa Beats. In addition to the first classes of the MBA curriculum, the students also learned how the RSM Career Development Centre can help them connect to companies, and how personal leadership development can help them gain personal and professional growth.

“The quality of the quantitative classes has been superb so far,” says Richard Norris, who is from the USA and worked in the architecture industry. “I was impressed with this week’s quantitative platform of business understanding and financial management classes. I’m really looking forward to the study trip and the living management consulting project.”
