Inaugural Address on Behavioural Ethics by Marius van Dijke

Marius van Dijke, endowed professor of Behavioural Ethics at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) will deliver his inaugural address entitled Understanding Immoral Conduct in Business Settings: A Behavioural Ethics Approach on 19 December.

In response to numerous business scandals, scholars increasingly attempt to contribute to the prevention of immoral behaviour in business settings by trying to answer the question what makes people behave in immoral ways. In his inaugural address, Marius van Dijke will give an overview of this burgeoning field of research, commonly referred to as “behavioural ethics”. He will also show how his own research has contributed to progress in this field. Next, he will identify some critical limitations of the current state of the field of behavioural ethics and present his agenda for future research.

Van Dijke will finish his lecture by addressing how insights from behavioural ethics research can be made more practically relevant for society by integrating them in the curricula of business schools and by applying them to design interventions aimed at improving the moral conduct of organisational managers and employees.

Marius van Dijke was appointed endowed Professor of Behavioural Ethics at RSM on 1 April 2014, to promote research into behavioural ethics and leadership of high integrity. This academic chair is endowed by the Erasmus Trust Fund, (Vereniging Trustfonds Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam). Professor Van Dijke’s research focuses on several key themes in the domain of behavioural ethics and leadership of high integrity, such as power as a stimulant of moral and immoral behaviour; why people value social justice so deeply; and the role of intuitive and controlled processes in moral judgment and behaviour. These issues have important implications for theory and practice, supplying tools that stimulate employees and managers to function in productive and morally appropriate ways.

The inaugural address will take place on Friday, 19 December 2014 and is open for all. The ceremony will start promptly at 4:00pm in the Auditorium (Erasmus Building), Burgemeester Oudlaan 50 in Rotterdam. The reception will take place at 4:45pm in the same building. Registrations for both events can be done here.
