PhD candidate David Unterdorfer from Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) achieved the third highest exam score at the Institute of Certified Management Accountants (ICMA®). The institute announced the winners of its most recent round of Certified Management Accountant (CMA®) medals, recognising the achievement of individuals in both the English and simplified Chinese exam programmes.

David Unterdorfer said he was drawn towards becoming a CMA Certified Management Accountant by its growing recognition as a testament of financial aptitude. “This is going to be valuable for me, even though I’m currently pursuing an academic career path,” said Unterdorfer. “It also gave me the chance to apply what I had learned in RSM’s MSc in Accounting & Financial Management and RSM’s preparatory course.”

According to Dr Paolo Perego, associate professor of management accounting and control at RSM, Unterdorfer performed exceptionally on the CMA exam. “The CMA credential is highly valued at organisations around the world,” said Perego. “It’s the most widely recognised international qualification for management accountants and financial managers,” he said, adding that David’s award proves that the integration of CMA specific training within RSM’s MSc in Accounting & Financial Management programme offers an excellent chance to prepare for the CMA exam.

More than 5,700 people took the CMA exam in English during the September-October 2014 testing period. “ICMA congratulates these award recipients and recognises their achievement,” said Samuel C. Weaver, chair of ICMA Board of Regents. “Award recipients once again exemplify the broad geographic diversity of the CMA programme. This past fiscal year, ICMA certified more than 3,000 members, and the number of CMAs now stands at an all-time high. By earning this credential, CMAs are helping improve their career outlook and contribute to the success of their respective organisations.”
