A two-day cycling tour through the Netherlands organised by students at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) will raise money to preserve the unique but diminishing culture of the population of a volcanic Pacific island – and the cyclists say that the more support they get, the harder and further they will ride! The RSM Charity Club has organised the tour for a team of 10 MBA and EMBA students to raise funds for a non-profit organisation helping the Tao, an aboriginal tribe on the Taiwanese island of Lan-yu in the Pacific Ocean.

The cycling team of 10 is currently training hard with coach and MBA student Alexandre Furlan for their two days on Dutch roads on 30 and 31 July. The route will start from Rotterdam and include Gouda, Haarlem – and where else?  The RSM cyclists say they will set themselves an even more challenging ride if donations top € 5,000 before Monday 20 July.

Every nation and culture is equal in the global community, says the RSM Charity Club bike tour organiser Theresa Yang, a student of the International Full-time MBA: ‘’We have seen the Tao struggle to restore their own culture, which has been devoured by modern society. They are also pursuing better living conditions. The Lan En Cultural and Educational Foundation on the island helps this ethnic group to preserve Tao marine culture. Our team decided to launch the bike tour and bring awareness of this issue to more people. ‘’

The amount raised will be updated weekly on RSM Charity Club’s webpage from 1 July. The students have also put their fundraising appeal on video. They come from countries including China, Brazil, Taiwan, Peru and India, and all recognise the value of diversity.  They have chosen to take part in this initiative to empower the Tao people from Lanyu Island to develop a better life, says Theresa Yang.
