Mayor, City of Rotterdam
Ahmed Aboutaleb has been mayor of the City of Rotterdam since 2009. His roles as mayor and as member of RSM’s Advisory Board ensure that the school’s connection with the city stays strong.
After his technical training in electronics, aviation technology and telecommunications, Ahmed’s career began as a reporter for Dutch media channels, including NOS Radio, RVU Television and RTL4 News. His political career in the Netherlands began in 1991, when he became officer for the Dutch Ministry of Welfare, Health and Culture. From 1994 to 1997 he was chief officer of the Social Economic Council, and then manager of the communications and publications sector of Statistics Netherlands (CBS) from 1997 to 1998. Ahmed then was the director of the Forum Institute for multicultural development between 1998 and 2002. In addition, he wrote columns for the Dutch newspaper Trouw.
Between 2002 and 2004, Ahmed served as director of the Societal, Economic and Cultural Development Administrative Board for the City of Amsterdam, followed by becoming the alderman in the fields of education, youth, employment, income and urban policy for the Dutch Labour Party (PvdA) in Amsterdam for three years. From 2007 to 2008 he served as state secretary for Social Affairs in the fourth cabinet of Jan Peter Balkenende.
Ahmed Aboutaleb spends his free time with his family. His interests include travelling and reading.
