"At the end of August 2017, I was diagnosed with colorectal cancer. In September, I underwent surgery to have the tumor removed, followed by chemotherapy treatment until Christmas.

This was a shock for my family and me, however I have been lucky to receive the right treatments and being handled by a great physician team at the OLVG hospital in Amsterdam. Eventhough I have always enjoyed life very much, I realise now how fragile it is so I can enjoy life now much better.

I am now clean and therefore I feel it is time for me to give back! 1 in 3 people will get cancer in their life however the impact is much broader as patient's relatives, family and work relations are as well deeply affected by the disease.

Research has made the last years great progresses, in particular with the emergence of immunotherapies, but still more than 100,000 people get cancer in the Netherlands per year and 45,000 do not survive. This is 70 times more than deaths caused by road traffic accident. For me it is clear that we can and should accelerate research to better prevent and treat cancer but also to improve patient quality of life.

Therefore, my contribution is to support the Alpe d’HuZes cause and to participate in the event by cycling to raise money for cancer research. What I particularly like with the Alpe d’HuZes is that this is a 100% volunteer organisation and that 100% of the money raised by the participants, is transferred to the KwF (Dutch Cancer Society) to finance research projects. What I also like is that this initiative has many parallels with the core values of Rotterdam School of Management:

o Caring: we make sure that individuals and organisations care, about others, their environment and themselves.
o Collaborative: we encourage individuals and organisations to join forces to advance their mutual interest. Leadership on the basis of teamwork is the way to tackle small and large challenges and opportunities locally and globally.

This is the reason why I would like to build an RSM team to participate in the next Alpe d’HuZes event on the 7 June 2018. This will be fun! We will climb the Alpe d’Huez and, at the same time, raise funds for cancer research, while building our professional networks.
