Professor Tal Simons has been appointed Professor of Organisation Theory in the department of Organisation and Personnel Management at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM). Tal’s research focuses on organisations’ persistence and change. She will further develop the department’s organisational theory (OT) research and teaching, to complement the department’s strong organisational behaviour (OB) group, as well as expand the department’s national and international connections and reputation.

“The study of organisations that are extremely ubiquitous social entities is central to our understanding of societies and economies. How societies and markets change and persist is therefore closely related to understanding organisations’ change and persistence, which is one of my principal goals,” she said. Both OT and OB are fundamental to the study of organisations, and by developing OT further Tal Simons’ appointment at RSM aims to enhance the appeal of this field of study to new students and researchers, as well as contribute to the department of Organisation and Personnel Management’s generation of new knowledge that gives comprehensive analyses and a greater understanding of organisations.

Her research has been published in leading journals such as Administrative Science Quarterly, Academy of Management Journal, and Organization Science among others. In her current work, she examines creative processes and dynamics, and aesthetic innovation. She also asks questions pertaining to time and history, contestation, legitimacy, and ideology, which she examines using quantitative and qualitative methodologies in various contexts including the cultural sector (in particular dance), contested industries such as tobacco, and organisational misconduct such as corporate fraud.

In addition to research, teaching and supervising theses and PhD students have been important aspects of Tal’s work. She has served the broader scholarly community as a member of various journals’ editorial boards, as a regular reviewer for various journals, and a member of the executive committee of the Organisation and Management Theory division in the Academy of Management.

Professor Simons holds a bachelor degree in Agriculture Sciences from the Hebrew University, a master degree in Labor Studies from Tel Aviv University (magna cum laude) and a PhD in Organization Behavior and Theory from Cornell University. Tal has held academic positions at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Tel Aviv University, Columbia University, Carnegie-Mellon University, and most recently at Tilburg University.
