Spain-based alumni from Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) who are members of the RSM Club of Spain organised a dynamic seminar for presidents and delegates of other alumni clubs about challenges in the European Union. It took place in Madrid on 13 November 2014.

The dinner event at restaurant La Manzana in Madrid attracted 24 participants, including Cornelis van Rij, the Dutch ambassador in Spain, and Patricia van Bentum, head of the economics department of the Dutch embassy in Spain. Other attendees were RSM alumni and presidents or delegates from top international universities, including Columbia University, London Business School, Boston College, University of Notre Dame, HEC Paris, University of Chicago, University of Manchester, Emory University, and Stanford University.  The event was initiated and organised by the RSM Club of Spain, in collaboration with the Ryder Club of Spain, an association of alumni clubs of Spain’s top business schools and universities.

Dutch Ambassador Cornelis van Rij presented his views about the main risks and challenges that the European Union needs to face. Van Rij’s presentation, entitled ‘A vision on the current European situation’, also covered what the European Union needs to do in order to successfully address the present situation.

Attendees had the opportunity to engage in open discussions about several topics, including who could be a clear leader for the EU, and if a branding strategy or emotional symbols are needed for people to feel more European. The thought-provoking sessions was followed by dinner, during which more topics were explored and participants expanded their professional and personal network.

RSM Club of Spain

The RSM Club of Spain is one of the most active alumni communities in RSM’s international alumni network and consists of two local chapters, one in Madrid and one in Barcelona. Not only does it connect RSM alumni in Spain, it also actively connects with other stakeholders, such as the Dutch embassy and other alumni associations to share experience and knowledge, and improve the quality of its events.

Based on the successes that the co-operation between the RSM Club of Spain and the Ryder Club of Spain have achieved, the RSM Club of Spain encourages RSM local chapters and clubs in other countries to find an association of alumni clubs in their corresponding country to build an important network and show what RSM alumni can do.
