Innovation Award for RSM alumnus and the ‘serious game’

The annual Accenture Innovation Awards, for companies less than three years old, recognise the most innovative Dutch products, services and concepts. The award-winning company abcdeSIM creates games at different levels for different types of patients and learning objectives, and the idea for it was prompted by a colleague of Nanninga’s, who reasoned that if pilots use simulators as part of their training, then doctors could do so too. Dr Stephanie Klein Nagelvoort-Schuit, head of emergency medicine at Erasmus MC, co-founded the company with Nanninga and now over 2,000 medical professionals in more than 20 hospitals – including Erasmus Medical Centre in Rotterdam – in three countries use their ‘serious game’.

Ronald Nanninga graduated with an MSc in Business Administration from RSM in 1992 and says studying at RSM gave him invaluable assistance. ‘Working in small teams was a great learning experience from a group dynamics perspective,” he said.

The Accenture Award judges’ comments said abcdeSIM’s technology simulates a truthful way to recreate stress and time constraints in the emergency department, and in a virtual world, mistakes are not fatal errors but learning moments. The serious game of abcdeSIM is based on a mathematical model of human physiology and was developed in collaboration with the Erasmus MC and the University of Twente.

Ronald Nanninga is featured as one of RSM’s ‘Enterprising Alumni’ in the latest issue of RSM Outlook magazine, which is out now.
