Erasmus Competition and Innovation Monitor & Erasmus Innovation Award

From the year 2006 onwards, ECBI – including its precursor – conducts annually the Erasmus Competition and Innovation Monitor. This monitor is among the largest cross-industry survey in The Netherlands covering various types of innovation. For example, investments in Research and Development (R&D), and in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) are included, just as various types of product and service innovations, and social innovation. In particular the latter type of innovation has received relatively limited attention. The Erasmus Competition and Innovation Monitor has a considerable emphasis on social innovation.

Building on state-of-the-art academic theories and validated measurement tools, around 10,000 organizations are invited to participate. Survey-data is complemented with data from other sources, such as financial databases. This project has recently been expanded to various specific industries – such as Dutch healthcare organizations and the Port of Rotterdam – and to countries like Belgium, Italy, Saudi Arabia, and United Kingdom. Findings based on insights from the Erasmus Competition and Innovation Monitor generated ample attention in the media and in management oriented magazines. They also provide opportunities to conduct state-of-the-art academic research on social innovation.

Based on data from the Erasmus Competition and Innovation Monitor, a selection of companies has the chance to be nominated for the prestigious Erasmus Innovation Award. A combination of survey-data, desk-research, and interviews with managers from companies is fundamental to make up the nominees for this Award. A jury consisting of respected representatives from various types of institutes – e.g., ministries, employer and employee federations – annually decides on which organization will be awarded with this prize.
