The Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA) Nederland was established in 2000 and comprises members who work at management level in the Dutch maritime industry. Its aim is to inspire, energise, motivate and educate women in the maritime industry, to increase their competence and empower them in their careers.

ECWO posed questions to WISTA’s board members to find out more about working in the maritime industry and why it is an underrated, yet highly attractive, career option for young women. We also asked the board members to share their role models.

Jorunn Eldøy’s career in the maritime/offshore industry started more than 20 years ago at a gas platform off the coast of Norway and later with a large chemical shipping company in Norway and The Netherlands. Now a key account manager with Mintra group, her focus is on building new business and new relations in the maritime and offshore industry while focusing on her existing clients’ HR and training needs, making their life a bit easier with the help of Mintra group’s digital learning and crew management solutions.

What does gender equality mean to you?

Every child has the potential to achieve astounding things. But for girls everywhere, that potential is often cut short by discrimination and inequality. It does not mean that men and woman have to become the same, but that their rights, responsibilities and opportunities in life will not depend on whether they are born male or female.

Who is your role model?

Gro Harlem Brundtland, the first female Prime Minister of Norway. She is also a medical doctor who champions health as a human right and a leading advocate on global preparedness for pandemics. Of gender equality she says that “until all of us share the same opportunities – to get an education, to work, to lead – we can never truly prosper”. She is affectionately referred to as “The mother of the nation” by Norwegians, and is a great role model not only to me, but to all girls and woman who are growing up today.
