Graduate Story - Joost Boer

Graduate Story - Joost Boer

Joost Boer completed the MSc Strategic Management programme at RSM in 2013 and now works in Manila, Philippines.

Job position and company:
I’m working in Manila as Head of Operations at and Interim SEO Team Lead at Lion&Lion. Both ventures are part of Nova Founders, an internet startup incubator.

How did you decide what you wanted to do after your studies?
I wanted to learn as much as possible in an as short as possible amount of time and pursue something abroad. I thought these factors to be the most important to consider in a first career step. My current employer is answering to both these factors.

How did you get your current job?
I applied to a vacancy I found on RSM Career Services Student Job Board.

What are your main tasks at your job and which ones do you like most?
Right now I’m heading operations for a financial comparison platform and heading  a team of 25 content writers and Search Engine Optimisation specialists. The most pleasant aspect is dealing with people, elevating them beyond their current capabilities and really get the most out of a team. Also, being able to build a company from the ground up is a very pleasant experience in itself.

Based on your experiences as a new employee on the job market, what kind of advice would you give to students starting their bachelor or MSc now?
Really consider entrepreneurship or an entrepreneurial environment. The amount of ownership you get endowed with is extremely rewarding and you can really accelerate your professional development.
