NGOs

Increasingly international non-governmental organisations (NGOs) are looking for partnerships with companies and governments in order to raise the efficiency and effectiveness of their activities. NGOs are confronted with particular questions when they set out to establish cross-sector partnerships for development. Important questions are:

  • How to select those for-profit organisations and governments that are useful to work with?
  • Can partnerships with companies increase the efficiency of NGO efforts in development?
  • Can partnerships with companies broaden the activities of both the NGO and the for-profit?
  • What new management models are required to manage cross-sector partnerships effectively and how to manage the sometimes conflicting interests of these partners?
  • Which entry and exit strategies can NGOs employ when partnering with companies?
  • To what extent can NGOs develop ‘for-profit’ activities/roles in collaboration with companies; which role conflicts could appear from that?
  • How to deal with questions of ‘ownership’ and responsibility within the partnerships?

The Partnerships Resource Centre aims at helping NGOs around the world to effectively manage their cross-sector partnerships to contribute to sustainable development.
