Wicked Problems Plaza

Wicked Problems Plaza

The Wicked Problems Plaza (WPP) is developed in order to address wicked problems: challenges that are cross-sectoral and demand a systemic change that can’t come from one single party. Examples are sustainable food chains, fighting poverty and climate issues. What we need is innovative solutions generated by the collaboration between a large diversity of stakeholders. In the WPP, stakeholders identify the problem’s different dimensions and discuss dilemmas. New ideas evolve from brainstorming on collective resolutions and stakeholders find themselves being taken from abstract problems to concrete solutions using their heads, hearts and hands. The topics of WPPs can be quite varied. For students, there’s the option to practice with multi-stakeholder dialogues and get a grip on global problems. Interested in organizing a WPP session? You can either organize one yourself with the assistance of our facilitation manual, or contact a facilitator who is experienced with the WPP method.

The WPP concept is developed by the Partnerships Resource Centre (PrC) in order to address wicked problems with effective multi-stakeholder dialogues. Theories on sustainable development goals and wicked problems state that we need the efforts of actors from all sectors in society in a partnerships in order to overcome today’s challenges. The WPP intends to create so-called coalitions of the needed that effectively deal with wicked problems.

Please note that this is not an easy task, and we do not claim to have found the optimal WPP session yet. The WPP is work in progress, and we hope that by sharing our insights and experiences with you, we can sustain the research and get closer to effective methods to address wicked problems.
