“We cannot keep on doing the same”

RSM has recorded several videos to explain how each of UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) relate to business. Centre of Excellence in Public Safety Management, CESAM, provides expertise on how strong and accountable institutions are crucial for SDG 16 on peace, justice and strong institutions, contributing to the system of common understanding, using justice in order to achieve peace. Regional and local conflicts are still inflicting hardship and suffering on civilians – even if global conflicts are declining. New threats include cybercrime and terrorism.

Prof. Gabriele Jacobs, the academic director of CESAM at RSM, explains how the main challenge is to give up the traditional views of solving the problems and to change how we look at security. The public-private partnerships in security can have multi-stakeholder perspectives while maintaining the need for institutions’ legitimacy. The new relationships between business and public bodies that results from challenges linked to new global threats are discussed by three experts from CESAM’s network: Adriaan van Dorp from ABN-AMRO, Dieter Schurmann from the Ministry of Interior in North-Rhine-Westfalia, Germany and Klaus Stullenberg with vast experience in the private security sector Münster, Germany. They reply to important questions such as: What changes in safety and security they have seen over the past few years; How can public/private partnership help achieve peace, justice and stable institutions and How can public and private sector work together to address these challenges?

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are the framework for training the stakeholders and decision makers of tomorrow to understand and solve the big societal challenges of the 21st century. It’s also a framework for RSM’s mission to be a force for positive change in the world. Each of the UN’s 17 SDGs refers to a big societal challenge and requires more than one stakeholder to solve them. RSM is at the forefront of breakthrough academic research and education in the field of sustainability. The videos presented on these webpages show how each challenge – represented by an SDG – relates to business. RSM intends to incorporate these videos, complemented with assignments and teaching cases, as learning modules into its programmes.
