A true leader of people and of organisations, Theo Backx, Executive in Residence at RSM, has had a broad, varied career in business. His impact comes from his ability to integrate and align every important aspect of business – finance, strategy, marketing and product development, and organisational behaviour – and his natural talent for motivating people.
Theo joined RSM eight years ago. He is responsible for the department of Executive Education and Organisational Development, for Corporate and Alumni Relations and for the RSM Advisory Board. Also, he is frequently invited to sit in panel discussions and juries. He was one of the initiators of the RSM Journeys with Erasmus events and the RSM Leadership Summit.
After beginning his career at a start-up trading company, which gave him practical experience in setting up and managing a business, Theo went on to join Sony Nederland BV. As Senior General Manager in charge of marketing development, he drove many successful product launches in the Dutch market, including Sony’s world-changing Walkman, CD and Camcorder products. Global product planning was his next step, and Theo was instrumental in creating such popular product categories as Discman.
In 1992 he was appointed Chairman of the Audiogroup of the newly-formed Sony Europa. He was responsible for establishing and driving Sony’s consumer operations throughout Europe, including Central and Eastern Europe. As Managing Director of So ny Europa, Theo also oversaw the running of corporate management, finance and administration, and human resources; he has also acted as board member for Sony Europa.
Theo Backx's education includes a bachelor degree in management from HBO of Amsterdam, an Executive Master from IMD, and an advanced management degree earned at Sony's corporate university in Japan. His career has been identified by characteristics that are described in business education terms as 'showing leadership', 'global', 'innovative', and 'entrepreneurial', with an ability to recognise and facilitate 'synergies'.
