Private equity is renowned for its high returns, but from time to time an investment is less successful - as with Hema, the Dutch department store chain. "You need a few success stories to compensate for underperforming investments," says Peter Roosenboom of RSM, who has done a lot of research into private equity. "It's usually possible to get the return straight."
