More than 180 participants, speakers, coaches and recruiters joined the 2024 Women Leading the Energy Transition conference at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) on Friday 15 March. The event – which aimed to find ways to leverage women’s leadership to create a better future, faster – was organised by the Erasmus Centre for Women and Organisations (ECWO) and 75inQ.

The full-day conference discussed how shared and inclusive leadership is a pre-requisite for a faster, fairer and more equal energy transition. 75inQ managing director Anouk Creusen talked about accelerating this energy transition by having more inclusive and shared leadership at the table. ECWO’s Dorothy Grandia said it is now time to integrate inclusion into the strategy of organisations because that is going to lead to a faster, fairer, more equitable and more stable energy transition.

Move away from business-as-usual

Former Dutch Labour Party leader Lilianne Ploumen emphasised the urgent need to move away from business-as-usual, including through elements like quota legislation. She said we need a new concept of leadership – namely that of shared, inclusive and co-leadership – to help us to disburse responsibilities and share authority to distribute resources strategically.

The morning’s plenary session also included a panel with Tom Van Ginkel, chief sales officer at JoulzEhssane Gounou, director zakelijk at Greenchoice; and Dyonne Rietveld, country chair and managing director Uniper Benelux. They talked about their companies’ energy transition and how they experience inclusion.

Energy transition workshops

Participants could also join workshops, led by professionals including Renske Nouwens and Roos van Genuchten of Joulz, Tessa de Geus of DRIFT) and RSM’s Dr Sofya Isaakyan. Coaching sessions helped people with the challenges within the energy transition.

The day was closed by Greenchoice’s general manager Coen de Ruiter, who said that while Greenchoice ranks high in terms of workforce diversity, there is more work to do and the energy company aims to achieve more inclusion for women.
