As products become more complex and sales of online retailers grow, manufacturing companies and distribution centers are increasingly turning to advanced technology to reduce their material handling costs. The authors highlight two articles that appear in the November issue of IIE Transactions, which is centered on facility logistics. Both articles describe analysis tools that facilitate the design and economic evaluation of systems utilizing RFID and real-time warehouse information systems. In "RFID in Mixed-Model Automotive Assembly: Process and Quality Cost Savings," professors Gary Gaukier of Texas A&M University and Warren Hausman of Stanford University show how RFID technology can be used to ensure correct assembly of parts and modules. In their paper "A Polling-Based Dynamic Order Picking System for Online Retailers," Professors Rene de Koster and Yeming Gong of Erasmus University Rotterdam propose and analyze a dynamic picking system
