CEMS students explore career paths with recruiters and alumni
Around 50 master students explored how they can shape their careers as part of the personal and professional development track of the MSc International Management/CEMS programme at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM). The event, which included recruiters and alumni panels, took place on campus on 31 October 2017.
The mandatory career orientation event was organised for the CEMS students to learn about the job selection process at companies, how they can shape their career, and what the challenges of job hunting and working are.
During the recruiter panel, recruiters from multinationals Deloitte, Procter & Gamble and formerly Google shared tips and recommendations about career opportunities, and which jobs to start out with to achieve what you want from your career. Students had the opportunity to ask them questions about the selection process from the company side too.
RSM alumni Wilco van Batenburg (Orange), Bart van Dongen (ABInBev), Rick Emondts (BCG), Tim Konrad (YStrategists), Marina Martin (Shell) and Anne van de Pol (Deloitte) also shared their work experience and offered valuable advice in the alumni career panel.
Students said they learned that companies don’t look for people who know a lot, but they look for people who can learn a lot. They also explored how to approach people who work at a company that you are interested in.
CEMS student Marloes van Noord says CEMS is a recognised title among many companies. “This helps when applying for a job. Also, the network that you build through CEMS is really valuable.”
“You can get to know the culture of a company by finding employees of that company via LinkedIn and talking to them, and by asking the right questions at interviews to get a better understanding of the culture of the company,” said Van Noord.
The event also covered how to deal with conflicts at work, and how to deal with performance management.
Connecting to business
The CEMS Student Club presented alumni-student mentoring platform RSM MentorMe and the CEMS Global Advisory & Mentoring Platform (GAMP) to show how student can get more advice from alumni about their options after their studies, and what it really means to work in business.
By organising this event, RSM aimed to help students make better and more informed career choices, and give them more insights about particular industries and companies. In addition, such events strengthen the ties between alumni and students.
The event concluded with a networking reception for the students, alumni and recruiters at the In de Smitse cafe on campus.
