A fearless energy transition - Prof. Wolf Ketter at TEDxRotterdam

Reliable and affordable energy is the top priority for businesses and consumers – that’s why there’s so much effort to make the transition to cleaner energy made from renewable sources sun as wind and sun. But even though developing energy storage is hindering progress, there’s no lack of effort, explained Professor Wolf Ketter to a full house at the latest TEDtalk in Rotterdam in November.

Wolf Ketter is the Director of the Erasmus Centre for Future Energy Business (ECFEB) at RSM as well as Director of the Institute of Energy Economics at the University of Cologne. The ECFEB’s researchers and academics focus on how to create smart and sustainable energy markets.

“There’s a fear of climate change and there’s a fear about reliable, affordable and sustainable energy,” he said, and explained that even though increasing availability of renewable energy is having a positive effect on the energy market and sending the price of renewable energy down, there’s also an imbalance. “Sustainable energy sources create a chaotic mess because of the inflexibility of storage,” said Prof. Ketter.

The theme of the TEdxRotterdam event was ‘being connected’. Prof. Ketter explained how the ECFEB’s research shows that energy technology of the future is all about being connected, and shows how the future energy landscape can be a sustainable one.

Connecting technologies such as ramping, dynamic pricing and smart metering with intelligent trading agents such as the ECFEB’s PowerTAC will make the energy market more reliable and affordable, he said. The ECFEB develops software for testing energy markets in a risk-free environment so that in future it will be possible to organise energy storage and usage to create a flexible and sustainable energy market that supplies everyone’s needs without relying on fossil fuels.
