Students get taste of food, sustainability and finance at Unilever
Students from the MSc Finance & Investments Advanced programme at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) visited Unilever as part of their curriculum on 8 December 2017. In addition to attending a session about combining sustainability with profit and employee development, the students played a tasting game with Unilever food products.
At Unilever Bestfoods Netherlands’ head office, the 46 students from the Class of 2018 learned how Unilever fosters its employees’ development from the company’s staff Jules de Vrijer, EU material cost manager; Guido van der Horst, finance intern; and Jeroen Berends, management trainee finance.
Sustainability for profit and people
Especially the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan plays a central role at the company and is embedded in every activity at Unilever, they learned.
“It seems to me that Unilever has recognised the need for sustainability and reconciles it with business in value enhancing activities, both for its profit and the people surrounding them,” said finance student Anne Mesguich from France.
Senior finance professionals Patrick van den Boom and Frank Verhagen, walked the students through their careers at Unilever and discussed challenges and opportunities they found along the way.
The company visit also included an office tour and a tasting competition, where students were challenged to identify which product was from Unilever and which was from competitors.
The day ended with networking drinks at the office. “I loved talking to the employees of Unilever. It gave a great impression of their culture,” said Dutch finance student Dominique Nolen.
