Speed interviews prepare finance students for career start
Students from the MSc Finance & Investments Advanced programme at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) concluded an intensive career coaching week with a full day of speed interviews with various financial consulting organisations and banks. The speed interview event took place at the Erasmus Paviljoen on campus on Friday 26 January 2018.
In total, representatives from 11 companies in the Netherlands and Germany came to campus to interview the students for about 20 minutes each. The organisations ranged from Dutch commercial banks such as Rabobank and ABN AMRO to the transaction services department from consultancies such as Deloitte, KPMG, and EY, to asset and liability manager Aegon, and development bank FMO.
This variety gave the 47 students the opportunity to match with an HR recruiter or business professional working in a company in their particular field of interest.
"I really enjoyed talking to the companies during the speed interview event. Especially the feedback we received from our interview partners was helpful to improve for future interviews," said German student Julia Bernhardt.
Each student had several interviews in one day. Each interview concluded with feedback from the interviewers about their performance. This was especially helpful for the students as they got professional feedback on their strengths and weaknesses.
Student Laura Raffaela Dreher agrees. “The feedback after the interview was really valuable as it gave me ideas on how I present myself to a professional interviewer. I could already use this feedback for the next interview.”
“It was a perfect opportunity to give a first impression to the companies, to get to know the potential placement at the different companies, and to generally get a better insight in different job opportunities,” Dreher said.
Comparing company cultures
With all these companies in one place, the various company cultures could immediately be compared. Through the speed interviews, students and companies could learn if there was a match between their ambitions. This allows students to follow up with applications for positions that they are interested in.
“I thought the company representatives were very friendly and genuinely interested in getting to know us. And, I got to know internship opportunities that I wasn’t aware of,” Dreher said.
The event concluded with networking drinks, giving students and companies the opportunity to follow-up in an informal matter after the initial contact from the speed interviews.
