During an interactive online session, Professor Jane Dutton (Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan) provided research-based tips and tricks for thriving in a virtual environment. Her lecture on 4 November 2020, entitled “Cultivating flourishing in a remote environment" marked her honorary doctorate from Erasmus University Rotterdam on the occasion of the university’s Dies Natalis on 8 November 2020.

The main question Prof. Dutton addressed was: how do we ensure that online meetings lead to productive interactions and foster connectedness, rather than isolation and loneliness?

Drawing on her ground-breaking research on positive relationships at work, she outlined how virtual meetings can be reimagined as ways to connect rather than feel disconnected. She argued that they can be used as a tool to harbour the creative energies and passions of people into productive outcomes rather than as just another medium of information exchange.

After her mini-lecture, a panel moderated by honorary promoter Prof. Joep Cornelissen and consisting of Dr Rebecca Hewett (assistant professor at RSM), Sai Kalvapalle (PhD candidate at RSM), and Sunil Singh (strategy director at Telenor Norge AS) commented on her remarks and asked additional questions including “How do we prioritise flourishing while the energy is low?”; “Do online settings constrain our non-verbal communication?”; and “How can we design a flourishing classroom and thus enhance the student experience?”
