How to apply

To apply to the Part-Time PhD programme, candidates need to submit the following documents:

  • A motivation letter that explains why you would like to do a PhD and why you chose to apply to ERIM. Please sketch your relevant educational and professional background and elaborate the research area in which you would like to do your PhD; please be specific and clearly refer to a research area specified under ‘Open Projects’ on the programme’s website. Indicate here which ERIM faculty your research most closely matches and whether you have spoken to any potential supervisors.
  • A brief research statement (one page suffices) in which you outline the type of research questions that you intend to study and the type of methodologies that you intend to employ. You may broadly sketch your interests or be specific about concrete research questions that you envision answering. You may also explain whether (or not) you intend to utilize data from your current employer and/or work on research questions related to your current profession. This then helps us to match you to a suitable supervisor.
  • A proof of writing in the English language. The purpose of this document is to demonstrate that you are capable of writing academic texts in English. This can be, for example, a chapter of your MSc or MBA thesis, a paper, or a research proposal for your intended research
  • Proof of your English level; i.e., the results of a TOEFL or IELTS test not older than two years. The minimum score for TOEFL is 100; for IELTS a minimum score of 7.5 required.
  • Certified BSc diploma(s) and grade list(s)
  • Certified MSc or MBA diploma(s) and grade list(s). Please note that to be eligible for consideration, applicants are required to have completed their degree with a written thesis
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • (Optional) The additional submission of a more extensive research proposal (see point “proof of writing”)
  • (Optional) For candidates applying to RSM: If you have already been in contact with RSM faculty who would be willing to supervise you if you are accepted to the program, please add a letter of recommendation from your intended promotor(s)

For a PT PhD project at Erasmus School of Economics (ESE), the school’s Admissions Committee also requires the following documents:

  •
    • A research plan coordinated with the intended supervisor from ESE (please coordinate it with the Doctoral Director of ESE (nrietveld@ese.eur.nl) and your intended supervisors);
    • Two reference letters;
    • A reference letter from the future supervisors; at least one of the supervisors has to be employed full-time by ESE.

For ‘Open Projects’, these documents can be supplied after the application deadline and after the matching with the supervisors has taken place.
