Conference history
Building on its mission, Duke University’s Fuqua/Coach K Center on Leadership & Ethics (COLE) pioneered the New Directions in Leadership Research Conference (NDLR) in May 2008. The 2008 and 2009 academic conferences presented interesting, novel, and generative research on leadership, and fostered knowledge exchange among leading scholars.
In 2008, Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) joined Duke to establish the NDLR Conference as a cross-continental partnership. In 2009, this partnership expanded to include INSEAD and the University of Pennsylvania. This consortium of schools further broadened the perspectives and resources available, establishing the NDLR Conference as a global leader in leadership and ethics scholarship.
In June 2019, the University of Pennsylvania completed its 10th and final year as part of the consortium. In its place, the University of Virginia joined the consortium of schools and will be hosting the 2028 conference.
The newest member of the consortium of schools is the University of Michigan which joined the group in 2022 and hosted NDLR in 2025.
