The Rainbow path has been completed! A little over a year ago, Marit de Ridder, recent Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) graduate, proposed the Rainbow path project and received funding from the RSM Hummingbird fund, among others. This all-inclusive path now lies on the Erasmus University (EUR)  Woudestein campus on the Institutenlaan, next to the EUR Pavilion.

When Marit was an RSM MSc International Management/CEMS programme student, she was surprised that a friend of hers regularly ran into difficulty and bias when publicly showing affection for his boyfriend. Marit found it bizarre that this kind of thing was still happening in today’s world. Not one to sit and wait for things to happen, Marit took action, and the Rainbow path idea was born.

Marit applied for the project in March 2021 through the Hummingbird Fund. “I was surprised that it wasn't on campus yet. It also took a while, but I'm glad the path is really there now."

Inclusive planning

A project like this takes sensitive and careful planning. Which is why, as she put her idea and proposal together, Marit made it a point to speak with organisations on- and off-campus. These included:

Erasmus Pride

EUR Real Estate & Facilities

Diversity & Inclusion
COC Netherlands

“Everyone was immediately enthusiastic [about the Rainbow path],” remembers Marit. That included COC Nederland, the national organisation in the field of LGBTIQ+ rights. Together with the Hummingbird fund, EUR Diversity & Inclusion paid for a large part of the project.
