The Executive Board of Erasmus University Rotterdam has appointed Professor Ansgar Richter as the new Dean of Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM). His appointment will come into effect on 1 November 2019. Prof. Richter is currently Dean of Surrey Business School at the University of Surrey in the UK. He succeeds Professor Steef van de Velde, who has held the position of Dean of RSM for the past eight years.

The Executive Board has chosen Professor Richter as new Dean of RSM because of his excellent research record, and his extensive experience in international business education and research. The Board is confident that Professor Richter will further strengthen the position of RSM as a leading business school in Europe and further afield.

Ansgar Richter has been Dean of Surrey Business School since October 2016. Prior to his appointment at Surrey, he was Head of the Organisation and Management Group at the University of Liverpool Management School and Head of the Department of Strategy, Organisation & Leadership at EBS Business School in Wiesbaden, Germany.

The profile and selection criteria for the Dean have been established in co-operation with the RSM Faculty Council, the RSM Leadership Team and RSM staff with input from representation from the broader university community and alumni. The Faculty Council has been involved in the recruitment procedure and supports Professor Richter’s appointment.

Professor Richter comments: “I am delighted to have been chosen as Dean of RSM. I am very much looking forward to working at this outstanding institution. It is RSM’s mission to be a force for positive change in the world, and I am fully committed to helping the School live this mission.”

Force for positive change

Professor Richter succeeds Professor Steef van de Velde. The Executive Board is most grateful for his leadership of RSM over the past eight years. Under Prof. Van de Velde’s guidance, RSM has adopted the UN Sustainable Development Goals, with RSM being a force for positive change. This aligns closely with the new strategy of Erasmus University, which focuses on creating positive societal impact.

Professor Van de Velde’s term as Dean ends per 1 September, 2019. In the intervening period until 1 November, 2019, Professor Dirk van Dierendonck will be Acting Dean of the School.
