Introduction

At the Education Services department of Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM), we are looking to hire a junior instructional designer who can start work in August 2026 (exact date can be discussed).

This vacancy is for 0.8-1.0 FTE (4-5 days per week), and we require that you work on campus at least 2 days per week. On the other days, it is possible to work from home. We ensure you are provided with a laptop and accessories.

As junior instructional designer and under the guidance of senior colleagues or faculty, you assist in the design, development and implementation of curriculum components and digital learning materials within our core education systems. These systems include our learning management system (LMS) and curriculum management system (CMS). Additionally, you support the creation of effective, accessible and engaging learning experiences to ensure they align with educational goals and institutional standards.

You report to the team lead Education Development and receive subject matter guidance from a senior learning consultant. You also collaborate with faculty, the Quality and Innovation team, subject matter experts (SMEs), application managers, programme managers, and other educational support staff.

Job description

For this role we require you to carry out the following: 

  • Support programme-level curriculum and learning design activities in line with, and as an ambassador for, RSM’s pedagogical direction and design principles
  • Support the development and maintenance of programme-level assessment plans, assist in identifying assessment gaps, over-assessment, or areas where evidence of student achievement could be strengthened
  • Support the preparation of evidence overviews (student performance data, learning outcome achievement, etc.)  and contribute to analysing programmes against the school’s pedagogical standards to inform continuous improvement
  • Enable scalable guidance on curriculum design and use of relevant learning techniques and technologies by developing templates, materials, and instruments
  • Support evidence-informed education development by reviewing relevant academic and professional literature, gathering stakeholder input, and monitoring developments in higher education
  • Contribute to team learning by sharing relevant tools, examples and insights
  • Work collaboratively and proactively in a changing educational environment
  • Support teachers with the implementation of their course in the LMS.

 

Job requirements

Your qualifications and skills include the following:

  • Master degree in a relevant field, such as education, educational sciences, instructional design, learning sciences, educational technology, or a related field
  • Understanding of curriculum design, constructive alignment, strategic alignment, learning outcomes and assessment design
  • Interest in programme-level educational development and quality enhancement
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to work with structured mapping, frameworks and complex information
  • Ability to develop clear templates, guidance materials and visual summaries
  • Comfortable working with ambiguity and translating broad ideas into practical outputs
  • Confident in facilitating workshops and discussions with critical, engaged academic audiences
  • Experience with software tools including the Microsoft Office suite and willing to learn management systems as needed, such as Canvas
  • Excellent written and spoken English, minimum C1 level. You are at an advantage when you have advanced Dutch language skills
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Good organisational skills and attention to detail
  • Proactive, curious and willing to learn
  • Awareness of how generative AI is shaping higher education and how to employ AI tools in your own design work.

Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) has an attractive package of employment conditions, including a generous holiday allowance of 8%, an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% and decent working conditions.

Your employment contract is initially for 12 months. The terms of employment are aligned with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU, UFO profile Medewerker Onderwijsontwikkeling 3). Depending on your experience, your salary will range between €3,546 and €5,538 gross per month (scale 10) for a full-time appointment.

Group

In the Education Services department, together with your team members, you support the design and development of two Bachelor of Science and 15 Master of Science programmes, with a total of ca. 8,000 international and Dutch students. 

You are part of an international, diverse team. You have four direct colleagues as well as frequent online and face-to-face contact with academic directors, teaching faculty, neighbouring teams, and, occasionally, external parties.

Department

The Education Services department is headed by two cluster leads and consists of several teams, among them programme management, schedulers, recruitment and admissions, study advice, education consultants, exchange office, examination board support, and the Career Centre. Altogether, there are around 65 employees working in RSM Education Services.

Additional information

As this is an initially temporary position with mandatory presence on campus for at least two days per week, we will only consider candidates who already have housing in the region and speak English at the required level.
