Introduction
Starting in August 2024, you will join Rotterdam School of Management (RSM), Erasmus University, as a research assistant. In this role, you will support MPA José L. Gallegos in the Organisational and Personnel Management department on the study "AI Developments in the Transshipment Industry: A Labor Perspective on Responsible AI."
José L. Gallegos holds a Master of Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School and is currently completing a PhD at RSM. His dissertation examines how trade unions frame the challenges posed by technological innovations in the workplace and the strategies they implement in response. While technology may improve efficiency and handle routine tasks, its negative societal effects are often overlooked. Unions have been critical of the potential job losses and unintended consequences brought by these technologies. However, the extent to which unions oppose automation or negotiate its terms remains underexplored. Gallegos' research aims to shed light on this topic by investigating how automation and AI technologies impact the nature and number of jobs at the Port of Rotterdam, particularly in the container sector, and how unions respond to these changes.
For more information about Gallegos' research, visit RSM’s website.
