Introduction

The PhD researcher within the SCENSUS project (Scaling the Societal Impact of Community Enterprises for Sustainability) is looking for teaching assistants (TAs) to support the transcription of empirical data from an ethnographic study. Over the past year and a half, data from dozens of semi-structured interviews and focus groups has been collected within a worker cooperative in the renewable energy sector in Spain.

Job description

The data was collected in Spanish, so an advanced, near-native level of Spanish is required. The interviews have already been preliminarily transcribed using AI software, with an estimated accuracy of around 80 percent. The main task consists of reviewing the transcripts while listening to the audio recordings of the interviews, in order to correct remaining errors, misspellings, and omissions. In addition to this, discussing and enriching the assistants’ insights on topics such as alternative organizations, cooperatives, social entrepreneurship, and sustainability is welcomed, which are the core of the research project. The opportunity to chat and provide guidance on qualitative research methods (especially ethnography) and data analysis for those who are interested is also possible. The position is available to start as soon as possible, and the workload is estimated at approximately 50 hours. A preparatory online meeting will be held to get to know each other, introduce the research project to the assistant, and address any questions and expectations the assistant may have regarding the role.

Job requirements

With only very few exceptions, to become a TA, you need to live in the Netherlands and be registered as a student. If this is not your first TA position, keep in mind that other TA-positions or other hours made as a TA may affect whether you can be hired for the present position. We believe that this can be a valuable experience for you and complement your learning from your bachelor/master’s programme, especially if you are interested in qualitative research methods and qualitative analysis. We estimate that the tasks will take about 50 hours, for which you will get compensated according to the SA salary scale. In the fall of 2025, this amounted to a gross hourly rate of € 19.18 for master students.

Employment conditions and benefits

The position is paid according to the RSM student-assistant salary scale. In the fall of 2025, this amounted to a gross hourly rate of € 19.18 for master students.
