The RSM Case Development Centre (CDC) recently released a set of two case entitled “Marlies Dekkers (A): The Girl Entrepreneur Who Dared to Dream” and “Marlies Dekkers (B): Recovery and Regrowth”.
Marlies Dekkers is an award-winning Dutch lingerie designer. Case A represents a rich account of her initial steps in developing and validating her business idea, followed by rapid scaling and growth of her company, as well as her subsequent struggles in managing the expansion and the cashflow. Case B tracks the reinvention of her company following bankruptcy, after an all-woman investor team stepped in to save her after declaring bankruptcy.
The case set, written by Magdalena Cholakova, Jacqueline Nolan, and Dianne Bevelander, can be discussed both with an undergraduate and a graduate audience, with a focus on Entrepreneurship and Strategic Management. It addresses a variety of learning objectives, for example: understanding entrepreneurial behaviours and the role of a founder’s team characteristics; assessing idea validation strategies and a venture’s core resources; analysing the challenges of rapid growth; and examining strategic renewal.
