Rotterdam School of Management (RSM)’s Case Development Centre (CDC) is organizing an online case writing course to help academics and practitioners develop teaching cases. The workshop – structured into two synchronous modules – will give participants the confidence and equip them with the skill to create their own cases effectively. The last (optional) asynchronous module will serve as a coaching session, helping participants turn their drafts into final products that they can use in class or submit for publication.

This workshop will be facilitated by Tao Yue, Managing Editor at the RSM CDC. Over the past decade, CDC has produced more than 250 teaching cases in almost all areas of business management, as well as other social science disciplines. Some of CDC’s cases have won international case writing competition prizes and others were adapted for publications like the Harvard Business Review and the Financial Times. CDC has given various case writing workshops for academics and students at RSM and in other schools in Europe and Asia.

Program

Before Module 1

CDC will send participants reading materials on case writing. Participants will get acquainted with the ABC of a teaching case and think about what idea they would like to turn into a case.

Module 1: The essence of case development

Date and time: Thursday, 18 November 2021, 15:00-17:00 CET

Participants will gain knowledge on:

  • differences between a research case, business case, and teaching case,
  • different ways to present a case (traditional case, mini case, multimedia case, etc.)
  • the case “market” and trend, and
  • the essence of a case and teaching note.

They will also actively:

  • develop the “focus” of their own cases, and
  • develop the learning objectives of their cases.

Module 2: The structure and content of a case

Date and time: Thursday, 25 November 2021, 15:00-17:00 CET

Participants will gain knowledge on:

  • data collection and selection,
  • interview and desk research techniques,
  • case and teaching note structures,
  • case writing style and conventions, and
  • case usage and release.

They will also actively develop their own

  • case synopsis, and
  • case and teaching note outlines.

In both modules, participants will also have the opportunity to:

  • receive practical tips on the case writing process, and
  • discuss their case ideas and other questions with the tutor and fellow participants.

After Module 2

After module 2, participants will further develop their cases and teaching notes on their own. If they wish, they can sign up for the RSM CDC individual case clinic and use customized support from CDC.

Module 3: Individual case clinic (optional)

Date and time: flexible

For those who have completed the draft version of their case and teaching note, they can send the draft to CDC and book a one-on-one session with a tutor to discuss their work.

After Module 3

Participants who complete module 3 have the option to submit their cases and teaching notes to the RSM CDC case collection. Once accepted by CDC, CDC will take care of final polishing and publishing the materials.
