Policy should not focus on increasing economic growth, but on a transition to a sustainable economy, according to Dirk Schoenmaker, Professor of Banking and Finance at RSM. “The nice thing is: if we do this smartly, these will become the new Delta Works. With the construction of those sea locks, the government created the water market. We still export that knowledge internationally”, says Schoenmaker. Exceptionally strong government policy is therefore needed. But, Schoenmaker also warns, there are major pitfalls in green industrial policy. The main one: clinging to companies that aren’t going to survive anyway.
